Australian Women's Match Racing Championships Youth Development Report

From the 12-14th of September the Australian Women's Match Racing Championships were held on Matilda Bay from the Royal Perth Yacht Club.

The regatta was held in Bakewell-White 8 metre yachts which requires 5 crew. My team consisted of skipper; Sarah Parker, local Perth main trimmer; Kirstin Norris, primary jib and kite trimmer; Evelyn Foster, secondary jib trimmer; Sophie Renouf and bow; Rachel Bower.

The 29er Nationals were held out of beautiful Jervis Bay, in Western Australia

IFY Report from Chelsea Connor and Georgia Tuckey from the 29er Nationals were held out of beautiful Jervis Bay, in Western Australia. The sailing club was small with all the usual facilities and . The water was sensational, crystal, clear making it easy to spot any sharks! The sailing conditions were very enjoyable and exciting with the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ coming through almost every afternoon. The average pressure most days was about fifteen knots but on some days we found it to be gusting late twenties. With this South Westerly pressure, came plenty of chop, making the sailing conditions very gnarly and rough, but extremely exciting. The conditions we had at nationals were extremely different to what we are used to here at Pittwater, it was fantastic to have the experience in sailing in such different conditions.

Youth Development Training Update

A lot has happened since the Youth Development program concluded last October. With the extensive 22 week training program concluding, one would think the sailors might put their feet up and take a bit of time off....wrong!
Everyone has been kept busy with their own respective dinghy campaigns, Match Racing and/or Ocean racing at the club and elsewhereYD member Malcolm Parker racing in the 2015 David Lukins Regatta YD member Malcolm Parker racing in the 2015 David Lukins Regatta

With Regards to the Match Racing, things really sped up during the summer season, during which we had some great results. The results achieved by the squad can be attributed to all the hard work and long training hours they have put. What has also been a big game changer for the squad and another reason for the improved results is the acquisition of the clubs brand new training fleet of Elliott 7 keelboats.

Here is a brief overview of the match racing results achieved by the Youth Development Squad over the spring/summer period.

As we move into February, the teams will head over to New Zealand to compete in youth International regattas in both Auckland and Wellington

As we approached the New Year, the squad was keen to be involved in ocean racing. In the past two years we have got a large portion of the squad onboard Peprpetual Mocean for the Pittwater to Coffs, however this year we decided to split all 8 of us over three boats, Santana, Pretty Woman and Le Billet. Despite the lack of sleep and record number of tacks up the coast, everyone had a fun competitive race. Once arriving at Coffs, everyone got involved in the festive spirit and enjoyed the wonderful Coffs hospitality. A particular mention must go to Milly, who did both the Sydney to Hobart and the Pittwater to Coffs.

We also enjoyed some large Keelboat sailing days, with Jason Antill, Peter Byford, Mark Griffith and Bruce Ferguson kindly lending their Farr 40s/Sydney 38s for the squad to train in. This was particularly useful for our team competing in the Warren Jones regatta, as they needed to get used to Match Racing larger yachts.

A big thanks to The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and its members, without your continued support of the program and ongoing contributions to the International Yachting Fund (IYF), none of this would be possible.

Tasmania Cruise 2015 Update

Cruise crews have been busy moving around Tassie's East Coast near Hobart. They have traversed the Dennison Canal, visited Port Arthur and spent time on Bruny Island.  They have also been to some other tourist spots.  One intrepid yacht made the trip up the Huon River to Franklin to join in the weekly dinner at the Heritage Boatshed.
