The first J/99 from J/Boats in the southern hemisphere is commissioned at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

22.05.20

The Club welcomed the commissioning of the first J/99 boat to Australia. A great all rounder boat for inshore racing, offshore and perfect for two handed sailors. The RPAYCs team in the boatyard and supportive tenants make commissioning anyboat a breeze.

Monique Mobbs, Boatyard manager commented: “It’s always a pleasure to commission the new J/Boats here. There is always something exciting happening in the range and we are delighted to see the very latest from the J/Boat stable. They are engineered so well and go together beautifully.  We have commissioned every new model at our yard for the past 10 years and look forward to our continuing relationship providing quality service for a quality product for which J/Boats are renowned.”

Sailing Director Nick Elliott added: “I haven’t had a chance to sail the boat yet but am really looking forward to being able to get out for a blast. It’s a joy to see some of the smaller yachts coming back; especially designs like the J/99, easy to handle with a small crew but no compromise on performance, perfect for the challenges of the East Coast and beyond. It certainly looks like it does everything it says on the box, even sailing in light to medium wind speeds she certainly looks fun and gets going. I really like this new breed of fully offshore capable 33 footers that are set up for short-handed sailing straight from the box and the J/99 certainly looks like it will be a winner. It will be great to see the boat competing on Pittwater supporting the RPAYC short-handed and fully crewed race series.”

Ray Entwistle (Director of J/Boats Australia and RPAYC member) would like to thank the services of RPAYC boatyard, Stewarts Shipwrights and Douglas Marine who all played a part in commissioning the J/99  The expertise from Kian and the team at Stewart Shipwrights who fit the keels and rudders on all our NSW boats, plus Douglas Marine - whether it’s a Volvo or Yanmar, Shane and his team commission and service all our engines, gearboxes and drive legs.  And not forgetting the local chandlers Bosuns Locker who always have what you want in stock.

The J/99 has competed in only two races before racing was discontinued. A twilight 2 up and was the only boat to finish in the dying breeze in its division, and a spinnaker race where she came over the line just 55 seconds after a forty-footer. Can’t wait for racing to start again, but in the mean time Sandra and I will be abiding by the social distancing requirements by practising short handed sailing 😊. The J/99 is quick, easy to handle and the fun factor is dialled in high mode. It’s very easy to see why the J/99 has won three major yachting awards already.
