Wednesday 2 March 6pm
Rod McCubbin, developer of Topyacht, a race management system that also incorporates handicapping options will again be visiting the club. Rod will be hosting a seminar on performance handicapping (PHS), methods of calculating handicaps, parameters that can be set, aims of PHS handicaps and more.
If you have any questions on PHS handicapping Rod is happy to answer them and talk through the contributing factors.
As the title says, PHS handicapping is performance based and unlike fixed ratings like IRC, ORCi, AMS, and can change on a race by race basis. Not one yacht club is the same when it comes to PHS handicapping as each club has its own needs/outcomes suited to the environment of the fleets sailed.
The following document is a great resource in understanding the in’s and out’s of PHS handicapping. Know your weighted average over your exponential calculation methods.
Handicapping terminology and definitions in TopYacht
Hc or HC : Handicap
AHC : Allocated HC (i.e. HC allocated for this race)
BCH : Back Calculated HC (HC needed to have the same HC Corrected time as the ref boat in this race). Ref Time/Boat Elapsed Time
CHC : Calculated HC. HC calculated once a race is run (it becomes the AHC for next race)
Ref Time = HC Corrected Time of Reference Boat – normally 45-48 percentile boat on HC Corrected Time.
The AHC for the next race will the CHC from the previous race.
