  (Completed)

This course has been developed for cruising sailors wishing to service their diesel engine and those cruising beyond the range of professional diesel   services.  The course will cover basic operation of modern diesel engines, highlighting and explaining significant operational components and  maintenance items.

 The course will include
  • the correct operation of your engine including
  • diagnostic signs that may be indicating future service requirements, and
  • how to service a diesel engine, and
  • what spares and tools to carry.
As the course utilizes a generic engine as the tuition example, the course will conclude by answering the question - “So how do I map all I have
learnt to my specific diesel engine?"

This course is highly recommended for at least one person from each boat participating in the Coral Coast Rendezvous Cruise 2011 - and other members wishing to gain more knowledge in this area.

Electrical Maintenance Sunday 13 March 9 am to 12pm

(Completed)  This seminar is an introduction to Marine Electrics and Troubleshooting.  It is about understanding what a cruising sailor should expect from a marine electrical system and then how to manage those expectations.

It deals with three basic questions:

1. What is my daily electrical consumption?
2.  What battery types and capacity do I require?
3.  What battery charge devices, charge current and charge time do I require?

Understanding both the meaning and answers to these questions will ensure trouble free electrical operation.

As the battery is the core of all marine electrical installation, this lecture is primarily about batteries, how they work, how to manage and maintain them.  The course also covers basic marine DC circuits, marine systems and how to diagnose basic marine DC faults.

Health Care for Cruising Sunday 27 March 10am to 3pm

This Seminar is designed to help those intending to cruise the Eastern seaboard, those who intend participating in the 2011 Coral Coast Cruise and any other interested sailors, members or non-members.  If numbers demand members will be given preference in booking.

The seminar assumes you will be shorthanded, offshore and up to 24 hours from port when the crew may unexpectedly become ill or injured. The seminar emphasis will be on what you can do to be well prepared for the cruise to minimise the risk of health issues and manage health problems you may meet while cruising.

It will help you plan what to add to the Green Book Medical Kit to tailor to your specific needs and better prepare you for sudden illness while cruising. It will cover specific infections, sail-related injuries, potential serious illness symptoms and sea-life venoms and bites. Some trauma will be discussed but this Seminar will complement a First Aid Course.

The notion of Triage or illness assessment will be explored to understand better the importance of urgency assessment (or not) of specific illnesses and injuries. We will discuss communications and pathways for contacting appropriate medical help on VHF and mobile phones as necessary in your cruise.
