RPAYC Performs strongly at the ACT Optimist Championships

Over the Oct 25/26 weekend 14 young RPA sailors along with parents and siblings totalling a 50 plus entourage headed down to the ACT Optimist Championships to compete within 3 fleets totalling 80 boats.

The event is a highlight on the Opti schedule. Over the years it has often been the first travelling venue for new families. A chance to experience the RPA regatta community atmosphere of family friendly onshore fun mixed with the opportunity to race hard amongst the best young sailors in Australia. All families from previous years have gone onto stretch their wings becoming part of the broader travelling youth sailing circus that has seen them reach all corners of Australia and in some cases the world in 2014.

Wild Saturday

As most of you are aware the Broken Bay and SOPS Fleets were hit by an extreme weather event last Saturday afternoon which came with virtually no forewarning, impacted different spots in varying degrees on the courses and obviously placed our Fleets in an extremely hazardous environment which included, 60+ knots of breeze, low visibility and confused and rough sea state with incoming tide running against the wind.

RPA Centreboard Fleet to take on Fremantle, Nationals & Youth Championships

At the end of the year, over 30 Youth Sailors from RPAYC will be making the long trek over to Fremantle to participate in a number of regattas, including the 29er, Optimist and Hobie Nationals and the Australian Youth Championships. It will be a big challenge for our sailors as the conditions are expected to be windy and bumpy. They are all used to the wind, but Pittwater doesn’t provide the bumps all that often. Many of the sailors have been training extensively and travelling to regattas wherever possible to allow them to be at their best for the big occasion.

The sailors currently signed up and raring to go are:

James Spithill - ISAF Sailor of the Year

ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill and RPAYC Club Member was presented with the 2014 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year (male) award at a ceremony in Palma, Spain on Tuesday evening.

The award came as recognition of the magnificent comeback Spithill presided over as the skipper of ORACLE TEAM USA during the 2013 America’s Cup. Down 8-1, on match point, Spithill and his team won eight consecutive races to retain the America’s Cup 9-8 over Emirates Team New Zealand. © Rolex/Kurt Arrigo© Rolex/Kurt Arrigo

Speakers Corner's 'Gem's of the RPA Social Calendar'

On Friday 10th October, we were once again privileged to welcome an impressive speaker to the club for Speakers’ Corner.

On this occasion, it was Don McIntyre who gave an enthusiastic and entertaining review of his adventurous life to date.
From a description of his year spent unsupported in Antarctica, to why he recommends flying only German built gyrocopters if you are planning a pan Australia flying trip, to a graphic description of his epic rerun of Blyth’s voyage in an open boat, having been cast adrift from HMS BOUNTY, the experiences just tumbled on.
