Hendrik Visser - Fleet Captain
In March this year, the Pittwater Etchells fleet sent six boats to compete in the Audi Etchells World Championships in Melbourne. There were 86 yachts entered from all over the world. The Pittwater team finished with three boats in the top twenty, with Rob Brown our best performer. In May, John Sheehan, Julian Plante and Ian Audsley competed in the ‘Winter Nationals’ in Mooloolooba with John achieving 10th place out of a highly competitive fleet of 55 yachts.
The Pittwater Etchells
Fleet owns ‘Pam’, which is used in our ‘Try Before You Buy’ program. We
encourage people to come out to experience the excitement of one
design racing on Pittwater. The program has been a great success with
the fleet growing to a very strong 20 boats on the register. There are
regularly 8-10 boats racing on weekends, providing an excellent
standard of one design racing.
This year we intend to expand our fleet further by including members of
the RPAYC Youth Development. In conjunction with the Club, we will be
offering the use of ‘Pam’ as part of their development program. We can
see that the highly trained young sailors who graduate from Youth
Development need to have a path to world class yacht racing.
RPAYC has always provided this standard of world class yachting. We
hope to encourage our young champions of the future to stay and develop
at RPAYC rather than move to other clubs as soon as they graduate from
the YD program.
If you are not so youthful, you are still welcome to try the Etchells
experience by contacting Ian Audsley or myself via the sailing office.
Finally, I would like to compliment the Club Board and management for
the excellent upgrade of the foyer facilities, with the much needed
lift providing safety for our elderly members.
