2011 Youth Development Program

The goal for Youth Development for 2011 is to provide the perfect environment for The Royal Prince Alfred sailors aged between 17-21* to take their sailing further. This season our focus is to create a tight team atmosphere. The program incorporates lectures every Friday night on a wide variety of subjects from goal setting, nutrition and time management though to tactics, strategy and sail trim. Saturday training will see a focus on developing all facets of their knowledge of the sport of sailing. From fleet racing, match racing and gym sessions though to seamanship. Our aim is to offer an all round education for all participants.

(* The Selection Committee reserves the right to accept a participant based on their sailing ability that may not fall into the age groups as specified above.)

RPAYC Youth Development Representative Teams

Following the completion of the Youth Development Program, teams, where applicable, will be selected to represent the club in the following youth Match Racing regattas;

·         Musto International at CYCA Sydney - 21st to 25th November

·         Harken International Youth at RPAYC Sydney - 26th to 30th November

·         RNZYS Youth International Auckland - 10th to 14th February 2012  

·         CentrePort Cup at RPNYC Wellington - 15th to 19th February 2012

·         Governors Cup at BYC Corona Del Mar USA* - July 2012

 (* This event will be dependant on results and performance at previous regattas as to whether RPAYC will be sending a representative team)

Optional Courses

It is highly recommended that the following courses are undertaken by participants during the Youth Development program.

• Umpire course
• Safety Boat Handling Course
• Instructors course
• NCAS level 1
• First aid

We can assist any Youth Development Sailor in enrolling in these courses.

 Presentation Night

The Annual Youth Development Presentation Night consists of a formal dinner with a special guest speaker. Numerous awards are given by the Coaches and the Commodore including graduation and course certificates, along with the presentation of the two annual awards, the Dame Pattie awards for best male and best female participant in the Youth Development 2012 program.

How to Apply

Simply complete the Expression of Interest, Code of Conduct Policy and Conditions of Participation Forms and return to the Yachting Office along with any other relevant information (eg. Sailing Resume).

There are only a limited number of places available in each course so please ensure you include all relevant information in your application.

Athletes and parents should be aware that continued training as well as some financial commitment is required if selected in RPAYC Youth Development Team's. The International Yachting Fund (a fund designed to help support young club sailors) while covering some of the cost of the team such as coaching support and entries, does not cover all the costs.
