The Club records detail a cruise to the Basin (from Sydney) at the beginning of the last Century. It was obviously an occasion of great significance that involved some very impressive boats. We are seeing a resurgence of interest in cruising which can be defined as boating activity that does not involve racing.
Organised activities range from short week-end trips within the Pittwater/Hawkesbury area through to major cruises to the Whitsundays & Lord Howe Island.
Information evenings, at which members are informed of likely conditions on specific trips as well as providing general yachting instructions and topical evenings, are held monthly at the First Friday functions.
Typical offshore trips involve Sydney Harbour, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and Port Stephens.
A trip to Sydney may have its ultimate destination as the fish markets, the historic explosives storage area at Bantry Bay or an exploration of the Lane Cove River.
A Christmas period cruise to a coastal destination is undertaken over a period of around two weeks. Sailing is generally planned on the basis of reaching the day's destination by mid afternoon in order to enjoy a relaxing evening.
Regular VHF Radio skeds are maintained between boats.
Trip timetables are planned with a view to allowing boats to remain in port if the weather is bad.
Inshore trips in the Pittwater/Broken Bay/Hawkesbury area with their myriad of secluded bays are enjoyed on a regular basis. Most weekends will reveal Cruising yachts from the Club enjoying this area.
Those who cruise together develop strong friendships and many social activities revolve around talk about the last or the next cruise.
In this context each year during the winter there is a "cruise ashore" whereby cars replace yachts and a suitable resort is chosen where everyone can enjoy the cool weather.
